Hot, hot, hot

Most of the electrical equipment used in this house has anti-overheating systems. They all cut out when it looks as

The electricity bill will be a monster if he doesn't stop using the fridge like that

The electricity bill will be a monster if he doesn't stop using the fridge like that

though the unit’s guts might melt.

They are working it seems. Looks like it was over 40C in the bedroom so the big stereo was off. It gets hot on cool days.

The computer died from heat prostration and it looks as though the m0dem went with it. They are working now. It has cooled in here. It’s back to 35C after the air-conditioner had been running about three hours. It also is off. It’s not the air-conditioner’s fault The little BC Dimplex 9005a is capable of keeping a room this size quite frosty. Just not this room. This room is not insulated. The main two wall are baked by the sun and radiate heat all day. It is normally hotter in here than outside on sunny summer days. I think the AC unit did well to get it all the way back to 35 degrees. It made the room a lot less humid too.

Phew……. Summer is just starting. I wonder how hard it is to acclimitize to regular 40 to 50 and beyond degree temperatures. Gonna be boring with no electricals working

  • The hot days have started hammering in. It went beyond 40C in here. The computer was left idle most of the day but eventually the effort of sitting about having one’s strength sapped and staring at walls had to end. It is, after all, the television as well. Games were out of the question as the graphics card seems to be the first thing to cook off.

Initially the computer case was moved further from any obstruction so it had at least 150mm clear all around. There is a spare drive port on the front and the door to that was opened to increase airflow. The oscillating room fan was placed in front of the case to move air about more quickly. All the screens and air holes have been cleaned.

The graphics card still started to shudder so I used some 16 x 16 x 5cm cheap plastic lunch containers with a handful of ice and 1cm of water to cool the case. Two of them were placed on top and left. The lids were firmly on top and in the heat there was no condensation. Later when I ran out of ice there some cool packs in the freezer and they replaced the ice cubes.

By 9pm when the southerly came and cooled everything I wasn’t feeling so great and was exhausted. It gets scary now, this heat leaches my strength even over a single day. A week of this and my name will on the list of people who succumbed

I will try and find a way to get the little air-conditioner working better. I wish the owner had taken up the governments offer of free insulation.

The things done to the computer to keep it cool were extreme emergency stuff and I have spent several hours googling various cooling options for CPU, case, graphics card etc.

Bit broke right now but I may be able to find enough for an Antec Super Cyclone Blower Dual Expansion slot cooler to start with. (or a smaller unit) If I remove the old modem card and blow some good air in there it might stop the graphics card from failing at under 40C. It is going to get hotter than that I suspect

There are some awesome fun coolers for the CPU these days. Tempted to save hard and try and get a lightshow and clear side for the case but we will
